SPACES
WITH
STORIES
OUR CONCEPT
What does being a migrant mean, for both individuals and the places that they move to?

Our project consists of this website, with embedded media, that showcases how migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers in Brighton are creating community cafés and sharing their culture with each other, and locals, through food, music and other activities. These spaces provide support, strengthen bonds and help in the forging of new relationships.
We invite you learn about these communities by looking at our documentary and by listening to our podcast.
But most of all, we encourage you to visit the cafés to become part of these communities!
SPACES
Whether permanent or periodical, a sense of space helps to create a sense of belonging and security.
COMMUNITY
Sharing culture in these spaces helps to build communities.

THE
CaféS
SUPPORT
These communities and networks create a sense of solidarity and provide support in all aspects of life.

THE TEAM
We are four students from the University of Sussex, studying for MAs in Media Practice for Development and Social change. We are all migrants, coming from very different backgrounds, and this has been our strength throughout the project. We bring different colours of the spectrum to the way we have discussed, observed and approached these stories and places.
Emily is a Northerner who loves living in Brighton. Anna is a Finnish sociologist, whose day can´t go by without a cup of coffee and social gatherings. Kamla, from Trinidad and Tobago, believes that we share a common humanity and must therefore be open to each other. Hannah is from London, and when not studying you can find her making coffees at one of Brighton's quirky cafes.

We hope that you enjoy our project and get to visit these wonderful and important cafés soon!

Behind every space, there’s a story worth hearing!
